Life and Career
Canals is a Puerto Rican American writer. During his formative years, he dreamt of becoming a famous director and idolized Steven Spielberg and Steven Soderbergh. Canals became a college administrator after four years of studying film, but decided to continue to pursue his writing career after ten years of working as a college administrator.
After having earned a Bachelors' Degree in Cinema and a Masters' Degree in Social Science from Binghamton University, Canals moved to Los Angeles, California to pursue his writing career in 2012. He joined the School of Theater, Film, and Television family as an MFA Screenwriter. Canals has written original pilots, two short films, features, plenty of poetry, and has done more academic research than he cares to mention. He enjoys exploring the resilience of the human spirit through complex urban drama. He's served as Research Assistant at Hungry Jackal Productions for Oscar-winning screenwriter Dustin Lance Black. In June 2014, Canals's original pilot, Providence, was honored as a winner in the prestigious UCLA Screenwriters Showcase. He won a Bronze Prize in 2015.
